Wade Cleary
PE, LEED® AP (Managing Principal)
Wade Cleary is managing principal of Cleary Zimmermann Engineers and is responsible for directing the operational resources and marketing functions of the firm. In the roles of Principal-in-Charge and Project Manager, he has provided mechanical engineering design for a wide variety of project types, both ground-up and renovations. His significant design projects include: the terminal renovations at the San Antonio International Airport, the Cancer Therapy Research Center (CTRC) and the 10,000-ton central plant at University Hospital. He is proficient in computer modeling of building systems and life-cycle cost comparison techniques. Wade earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1994; is a registered Professional Engineer in Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Florida, Wisconsin, and Minnesota and is a LEED® AP BD+C.
Wade began his career at San Antonio-based architectural and engineering firm Marmon Mok where he was responsible for the direction and management of the firm’s engineering division. Having risen to the position of partner and principal, Wade left Marmon Mok in 2006 to establish Cleary Zimmermann Engineers with business partner Danny Zimmermann.
Over the course of his career, Wade has served as a model to his fellow engineering colleagues and has become a respected leader within the engineering community. He earned professional recognition as a 2004 “40 Under 40 Rising Star” by the San Antonio Business Journal. Wade comes from a family of engineers – his father is an electrical engineer, his mother (deceased) was a mechanical engineer and his brother is an electrical engineer.
Wade is active in his local community. He serves on the board of directors for the Northside Education Foundation, and sits on his church’s building committee. He has also served as a volunteer fire fighter, a little league coach and president of the Pinnacle Property Owners Association.
Danny Zimmermann
PE, LEED® AP (Principal)
Danny Zimmermann, co-founder of Cleary Zimmermann Engineers, is a Design Engineer and Project Manager for the firm. He is also responsible for managing the firm’s business and financial affairs. He is an effective leader with strict attention to detail and an assertive communication style. Danny comes from a contracting background, so his approach to design is rooted in practical application. He is proficient in the design both mechanical HVAC and plumbing and fire suppression systems. His experience includes a wide array of systems for academic facilities, hospitals, surgery centers and clinics, clinical and research laboratories, and retirement communities. Danny earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in 2001, and is a registered Professional Engineer in Texas.
Danny began his career as a student intern for a leading architecture and engineering firm, Marmon Mok. In only a few short years, he was promoted through the ranks of Associate, Senior Associate and finally to Chief Mechanical Engineer. In 2006 he left the firm to establish Cleary Zimmermann Engineers with business partner Wade Cleary. In recognition of his aspiring business leadership, the San Antonio Business Journal distinguished him in 2008 as a “40 Under 40 Rising Star.”
Danny is active in his local community and volunteers his time for professional and charitable organizations. He is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) while also serving on the board of trustees as treasurer for his church. He is a past-president and an executive committee member of the UTSA Alumni Association Board of Directors, and chaired the organization’s 5K run/walk “Diploma Dash” for three consecutive years - raising tens of thousands of dollars for UTSA student scholarships. In 2007, the UTSA Alumni Association recognized Danny as “Board Member of the Year.” Danny also serves on the Mechanical Appeals and Advisory Board for the City of San Antonio.
Matthew Smith
PE (Associate Principal)
Matthew Smith is Director of Electrical Engineering , and has experience in all phases of planning, design and construction for both electrical and mechanical systems. Electrically, his experience includes service entry, power distribution, lighting, photometrics, fire alarm, security, UPS and emergency stand-by power systems, telephone, data and other special systems. Mechanically, his experience includes traditional HVAC, controls, refrigeration, industrial processes, large-scale hydronic piping and central plants. This combination of electrical and mechanical experience affords him the ability to provide a holistic view of projects and coordinate all the disciplines. He is proficient in cost analysis, project cost management, master planning and dealing with complicated phased projects. Matthew earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in 1996, and is a dual-disciplined (ME/EE), registered Professional Engineer in Texas.
Trey McDougall
PE (Associate Principal)
Trey E. McDougall is Director of Mechanical Engineering for the firm. He is responsible for the day-to-day direction and management of the mechanical and plumbing design teams. His gregarious leadership continually produces effective results. He plays a crucial role in the management, orchestration and development of projects. Trey has worked on a wide range of project types and developed a broad experience base that includes hospitals, bio-safety laboratories, retirement communities, K-12 and university academic facilities, banks, computer rooms and data centers, commercial laundries, clean rooms and isolation for tuberculosis suites. Trey earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2000, and is a registered Professional Engineer in Texas.
Jerry Katz
(Associate Principal)
Jerry Katz is a Master Electrician (Ret.), and serves as an Associate Principal for Cleary Zimmermann Engineers. His responsibilities include construction administration, the allocation of staff resources, and project management. Jerry's vast project experience ranges from education to healthcare to computer data centers.
Jerry is a veteran of the electrical contracting business, having dedicated over 50-years to the trade. Among his many achievements, he has owned a successful electrical contracting company and chaired the Electrical Examining and Supervisory Board for the City of San Antonio. Jerry brings a wealth of knowledge and ‘know how’ to our team.
Stephen Archer
LEED® AP (VP of Commissioning)
Stephen Archer is Vice President of Cleary Zimmermann Engineers’ Commissioning Division and his focus is on performance delivery for today’s complicated mechanical systems and building automation systems (BAS). Stephen has extensive knowledge of HVAC equipment and maintenance and BAS control operations and energy performance. His experience includes large, chilled water central distribution plants, K-12 schools, college campuses, laboratories, thermal storage, process cooling, marine life safety, office buildings and hospitals. Stephen earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 1993; is certified by the National Environmental Balancing Bureau (NEBB) as a Test and Balance Supervisor for Air and Hydronic Systems and as a Building Systems Commissioning Administrator; and is a LEED® Accredited Professional.
